Hi, the classic explanation is that you use them when wearing ski gogggles or similar. The long eye relief means you can still see the full frame. I found mine most useful when I was shooting wildlife in South Africa with long lenses on a tripod. It was very convenient to twist the finder upright and use it like a laterally correct waist-level finder, but with my eye right up to it. It makes everything seem cinematic because of all the black space around it.
