I'd guess that these devices stop working when the voltage level gets below some threshold, but the voltage level of a fully charged AA NiMH battery should stay constant at 1.2v until it's almost fully discharged. This differs from an alkaline, which steadily ramps down from 1.5v (new) to 1.0v (dead).
