Look up "Arca-Swiss C1 Cube", Larry. It's about the same price as one of my
cheaper 'hideously expensive' Leica M lenses.

The Acratech GP head is about $400, which is about middle of the pack for a
professional quality ball head that can handle a pro-grade 500-1000mm lens on
35 or medium-format camera for Macro magnification work, price-wise. Once you
move into these areas of endeavor, the cost of equipment that actually works
goes way up. Less expensive heads are neither precise nor strong enough to do
the job properly.
