There are some families in SA descended from convicts who managed to escape
overboard & swim ashore when the ships passed by. Probably several didn't
make it! Nevertheless, those who did could easily evade the overstretched
authorities in the wild days of the Cape Colony & enjoy their new found
freedom. One Phalaborwa family claim their G-G-Grandfather (O'Connor) found
his way to a sheep farm in Dordrecht where he initially worked as a farmhand
but eventually married the farmer's daughter.

Oh yes. It was no picnic for any convicts transported to Australia but
the ones who ended up in Tasmania saw especially harsh treatment.

I suspect it probably doesn't date to the same period as the barracks
but it's certainly old.

These barracks are located on a high cliff at Stanley on the north coast
of Tasmania, where they have been exposed to gales from Bass Strait for
