I'm now remembering something we have here called "Britsh Soldiers" -
reviewed alan's explaination - which I must have known at some point -
since I was in the Mycological Society for a couple of years... sheesh -its
getting worse and worse...

Is it real or my monitor?
No - definitely lichen. I wondered about that myself - I'd certainly
not come across anything like this in my travels, but a bit of online
searching turned up some similar lichens.
If you're referring to the colours, yes they are real - enhanced by the
late afternoon light.

That's a fascinating image, Brian.
Is it me or is there a pronounced yellow/orange colour cast though?
Yes there is. The only post processing was levels adjustment so I think
the cast is due to the fact that the photo was taken in late afternoon
in the 'golden hour'.
Thanks for the comment, Bruce.
