Honest, ALan - I really have photo'ed British soldiers in the woodlands
of New England or the Canadian maritime provinces.... not cultivated..or
did I think you were saying that and I'm misunderstanding "propagatedfor
posterity".. I didn't take the photo I sent below. But those in BRian's
photo reminded me of them

Come on Ann, isn't age just a number? Most of us are past the three
score & ten. You're wider awake than most. Everything you ever learnt
or experienced is somewhere in your cranial database - you just have
to get it out.
To add to my previous bit, with thousands of algae & fungi species
around, the chances of two lichens in the wild being the same is very
remote. Spectacular combinations like the British Soldiers are
propagated for posterity.

I'm now remembering something we have here called "Britsh Soldiers" -
reviewed alan's explaination - which I must have known at some point -
since I was in the Mycological Society for a couple of years... sheesh
-its
getting worse and worse...
these are British soldiers

and maybe because there are little orange "florets" all over the place?

Is it real or my monitor?
No - definitely lichen. I wondered about that myself - I'd certainly
not come across anything like this in my travels, but a bit of online
searching turned up some similar lichens.
If you're referring to the colours, yes they are real - enhanced by the
late afternoon light.

That's a fascinating image, Brian.
Is it me or is there a pronounced yellow/orange colour cast though?
Yes there is. The only post processing was levels adjustment so I
think
the cast is due to the fact that the photo was taken in late afternoon
in the 'golden hour'.
Thanks for the comment, Bruce.
