FWIW when I bought my 5K iMac I also ordered a DVI adaptor to run the external screen I was using with my old laptop. Haven't used it since trying it out. Admittedly I've been too busy with life to do much serious CAD work on it yet but the little I've managed has been fine on the single screen. Don't know what your eyesight is like but I'm not going back after seeing text on this thing.
