Thanks, Alan. The whales are big -- 40 tons or so -- but generally peaceful. They migrate each year from Alaska to Hawai'i each year, a trip of 6,000 miles. They eat nothing from the time they leave Alaska until they return. In Hawai'i, they give birth, train the calves, and mate. They are easily approachable, although it is illegal to approach closer than 100 yards. Closer encounter happen when ships idle their engines and let the whales approach.
