My old 2007-era iMacs (still running two of them) have two slots but for weird hardware reasons can take a 4G SIMM in one slot and a 2G SIMM in the other for a total of 6G RAM -- the upper limit. Sp Larry's guess is a reasonable one.
That's what I found out with OWC docs and did the upgrade successfully twice.
