Fred,
I concur with the statement you found in
Modern Photo. I purchased my K45-125 new
when I lived in California and had the
same question with my dealer. His research
at the time was that Pentax could not get
the attachment to get any kind of quality
the to short end of the zoom (45m).
Apparently this is why we haven't seen any more
of the end-of-the-lens macro attachments
since.

Paul:

I happened across the review of the SMC Takumar version of the
45-125/4 zoom in the August 1975 issue of Modern Photography.
Apparently Modern Photo testers had the same sort of confusion:

"Regarding close focusing, we found ourselves totally confused by
the otherwise excellent instruction booklet which comes with the
lens. It states that if you wish to focus closer than zoom lens
focusing will permit, you should attach the supplied attachment lens
which is stored inside the case. However, we just couldn't find such
a supplementary lens. A check with the importers revealed the fact
that the supplementary lens wasn't available. We were told that the
designers were not satisfied with the optical quality obtainable
and had withdrawn the close-up lens. Under the circumstances, the
instructions should certainly be revised so you don't think you are
not getting something that you are entitled to."
