It probably all depends on budget and what the final product is meant for. Do you plan on publishing your work? In what medium (web, gallery, media, etc)?
My personal preference would be to shoot high quality slide film like Velvia and scan with a film scanner like a top end Nikon coolscan. My budget dictates that I shoot Velvia and scan with a HP PhotoSmart (it was free!). Of course you could buy a super high megapixel DSLR (D1X?) if going straight to digital makes more sense for your purposes. digital point and shoots wouldn't be ideal for macro. Framing and composition are much better accomplished with an SLR of one type or another. In the end, it depends on what works best for you and how much you can afford.
