If you want a portable studio, spring for the stands.
If you are not going touring, you can get electrical conduit
from a building supplier, and hang it from the ceiling with a
couple of large screw hooks, such as what are sold for hanging
garden implements and bicycles. Attach the backdrop with big
spring clamps, or sew loops to it, or sew a loop the entire
length and thread the coduit through it.
If you are going to make stands, do overbuild them. I would use
1 1/2" ID drain waste pipe for this sort of project.
