I don't need to carry the iPad, but I do almost always have it with me. It has whatever book I'm reading on it when I'm sitting somewhere waiting for people to show up or just taking a break. Or even movies for the same purpose. I can do some writing, or drawing, or web surfing, or working some photos, etc etc, with it at need or whim. It's my most useful communications tool, moreso than the phone.
The rucksack or a larger backpack suit me better than bags attached to the bike or panniers, I've found.
