We used to have impalas & duikers doing that but there are too many walls,
fences & palisades now. Pity.

I have had to stop putting out feeders, except for hummingbird feeders.
The deer rise up on their back legs to butt the feeders, and spill out the
seed so they can eat it. Even feeders that are too high for them to reach
(and therefore too high to easily refill) attract the deer to clean up
underneath the feeders after the Jays and Cardinals pick out the choice
morsels and scatter the rest. Once in the yard, they eat every tender shoot
on every bush, and tempt my dog to chase them into the neighboring woods.

We have six feeders. Two are the standard plastic tubular type with a few
perch on the sides and a tray at the bottom. Filled with what our feed
store calls “cardinal mix.” These attracts cardinals, doves, sparrows,

We’ve tried the suet feeders but our local birds don’t seem too
interested.
We site the feeders with the following in mind: keeping the squirrels out,
keeping the turkeys out, keeping the feeders the right distance from our
windows to minimize bird strikes, and giving us a nice view so we can
enjoy
the visitors. Oh, and photography would be nice but I don’t have positions
that give me a good sightline without disturbing the birds.
The turkeys learned that when I open the people-door out of the garage,
that I might well be carrying bird food. And they would come running. And
a
few figured out that when the feeders were full, they could jump up, hit
the bottom of the feeders with the top of their head, jostle enough seed
to
the ground for them to then find and eat… Some feeders now have fences on
the ground around the bottom so the turkeys can’t get underneath, others
have been raised just high enough so that even the best jumper can’t quite
get to them.
