Hey Chris - Were you ever at the Kingston plant? I was an engineering 
apprentice at Hawker's in
Kingston (1956-7), plated cockpit parts for the Hunter, did paint tests for the 
wing and tailplane
panels, and ended up metallurgical testing of steel components in the test lab 
- learned so much
there!

They used to make canopies for Hawker Hunters, Harriers and Hawks  in the 
aircraft factory where I
did my apprenticeship. Very specialised and I remember seeing a bloody great 
sheet of hot Perspex
being draped over a greasy wooden mould. It was then subject to a lot of 
polishing to make it
optically perfect and to remove any distortion - after all, the pilot ideally 
would want to see the
target / runway in the right place.. It took many hours.
