The comparison is more apt than you might imagine: Imax uses regular 70mm film, but sideways (like a 6x7 camera) as opposed to vertically (like a 645 camera), vertical being the standard for 70mm. I've handled a few actual frames of Imax film, and it's slightly larger than my 67 negs, but not by a lot.
