I think optically they are quite similar and you can't really go wrong
with either one.  My understanding is that the 55/4 is no worse and
maybe slightly better optically.

I think it comes down to other factors.  The biggest plus to the
55/3.5 is that it can be obtained for less money.  Could be a big
plus.  The pluses to the 55/4 are smaller size and weight.  As you are
aware there is a difference in filter size 100mm vs. 77mm.

In my current backpack, I would have trouble putting the 55/3.5 in
because of that front element.
