So, thinking about the responses from PDMLers and the information I found myself, I realized what question I should have asked: Does anybody know if this area of photography (children's group photos) allow to have a reasonable business? By "reasonable", I mean affordable for customers, providing good quality photos, and financially feasible for the photographers. I.e. is it fundamentally "race-to-the-bottom" sector, or it is just the result of how various outlets/photographers conduct their business?
I think the school photo business is often a "loss leader". What they really want is to get the school's "sports" team contract where they can do UP selling. That's where the money seems to be.
John: so, the Strawbridge studios that you've mentioned: do they produce reasonable quality photos? (BTW, the photo on their "Administrators" page is obviously photoshopped, and that job could've been done better: http://www.strawbridge.net/administrators/ )
I'm not even sure they took that photo. It's probably stock. There's not much room for the overhead of Photoshop in the School Photo business. OTOH, since Photoshop really isn't part of their business maybe they're just not good at it. -- Science - Questions we may never find answers for.
