That's why people bring back some sort of trinket from their vacation
travels, or save locks of their children's hair, or whatever we do to
have some sort of keepsake to jog our memories.
The problem with having a camera mashed into your face all the time is
that you will have no memories to jog, other than the smell of sweat
covered plastic.
Exactly!
I took great care that most of my photography during last summer's
eclipse was happening automatically. I wanted to experience it, not just
get some photos.
I've always felt that being where nice pictures are is more important
than taking pictures when there.
Sadly, I'm getting to the point in my life where it would be nice to
have a few more pictures reminding me of the nice places I've been,
and have forgotten about.
There's a balance to it, isn't there.
I feel exactly the same way. I know there are many nice places I've been
to where I didn't bring a camera, and it's a bit scary to face that the
brain has decided not to devote any synapses to storing anything from
the experience, based on some biological principle of evolutionary
significance only. Not a lot of mind over matter, even within one's own
mind.
I recently replaced the motor in my daily driver Subaru. A car that I
don't know well, and for which affordable shop manuals for that year are
not available. I took a metric shedload of photos of the process. When
I was putting things back together I was extremely grateful that I had.
