I haven’t touched Acrobat Reader in a decade or more. Utter waste of time. Adobe has been shoveling a whole pile of multimedia horsepucky into PDF for a long time; I just ignore all that crap.
MacOS’ native Preview app reads and writes PDF at a sensible level of complexity very well. There are a good number of native and 3rd party apps for both macOS and iOS that work with PDFs beyond that too. Those are what I use.
