That is kind of odd, because I'm also a non-subscriber and usually locked out by the paywall. I usually can read the first couple of sentences above an ad that says if I want to read the rest of the article I have to subscribe.

But for some reason this one appeared to be outside the paywall.

The gist:

: The Russians used a variety of methods to acquire bitcoin, including mining,
: trading on peer-to-peer exchanges, and using prepaid cards.

and

: Russian intelligence officers moved those funds around through multiple
: wallets and exchanges, making them harder to track. A single user can have
: hundreds of different bitcoin “wallets,” without identities or with fake
: identities in an effort to hide their tracks. Some users trying to operate
: anonymously also use what are called virtual private networks, or VPNs, : services that block the move of data from public sight. : : Despite efforts to remain anonymous, prosecutors said the Russians connected
: their bitcoin transactions with their hacking efforts. “On occasion, the
: conspirators facilitated bitcoin payments using the same computers that they
: used to conduct their hacking activity,” the indictment said.

I wondered if "blackmail" SPAM might be one of the "variety of methods" they used to to acquire bitcoin?

I already dumped Larry's original post from my Yahoo account (and for some reason it never showed up to Earthlink) when I noticed this and made a mental connection with the "blackmailer" demanding bitcoins:

There may be more to the "blackmail" SPAM than meets the eye.
