Thanks, Alan, Jack and Ann!

I was preparing to photograph their exit from the little net cage they were
in. I had the camera and the 100 mm macro on a tripod. One fluttered
weakly out, and landed on my right hand, making it impossible for me to
move the tripod and try for an image. After a few seconds, by tilting my
right hand I managed to get the butterfly to move to my left hand, at which
point I was able to pop the quick release on the tripod and get the camera
in my right hand. With the 100 mm lens, I couldn't really get the camera
far enough away from my left hand (and the butterfly) to properly frame and
focus the shot, so most of the shots were either fuzzy or cut off, but I
did get a couple of exposures that at least showed the new butterfly
desperately clinging to my hand while trying to dry out its wings.

I released them as soon as they appeared able to fly properly, and was
thrilled to see them quickly locate and alight upon my purple butterfly
bush plant.
