(portrait to infinity) distances it's an outstanding lens though.

There is also the Tamron SP 70-210/3.5-4 58mm filter, which is
two-touch, quite cheap used, and has IIRC 1:2 magnification! And
supposedly quite better at macro than the newer 3.5 version. One list
member has this older one, please, how does it fare at macro?

I remember one Nikon owner complaining his 80-200/2.8 Sigma
couldn't focus closer than 1.5 (2) ? meters at either end, he wanted
to buy the shortest ext.tube but that was too long for him (for
photography of models on the floor from short ladder). But perhaps he
got older model.
