I'd be afraid of the dust particles produced by rice.

Larry, sorry to hear about the mishap. I hope you had insurance and it will cover the replacement.

I hope this will give you a smile:
At first, I was confused how your ass knocking off a teakettle, which
poured a wave of water onto your equipment, - resulted in your
scrapes and contusions. (Did lenses or the teakettle resist your ass' aggression?) It took me quite some time to figure it out and I had to re-read your poetic message a few times. The fact that my literal teakettle was still full as I hadn't finished my morning tea could've been a factor in this mis-reading.

Put it in plastic container for a day or two with a few silicagel bags and
fingers crossed. The silicagel bags should not touch the lens, if they get
    wet the solution is corrosive.

I got knocked ass over teakettle this afternoon by a wave at Thor's well
this afternoon. The good news is that I had the lens cap on the 15-30,
my K-1, K-3II and my 28-105 all seem to be unscathed. I also expect my
various scrapes and contusions to heal OK.
The not so good news is that the 15-30 will no longer autofocus and when
I put it on either of two camera bodies they don't read it as an
autofocus lens. I don't see any damage to contacts.

Any ideas for an easy fix? Or should I just send it in?
