Same here John - I think its something about 'our' generation. My family
didn't have the money to buy new things as I was growing up so when
something stopped working my father fixed it - when clothes no longer fit my
older brothers I got them. Now you can't even buy components to fix a broken
whatsit and in the auto industry you generally have to buy an entire
assembly when a minor component goes hay wire.

Cameras are not the only consumer item not made for repair. Try to get a
coffee maker or other kitchen appliance repaired and you'll find the same
issue.
In optimizing design, repairability doesn't figure into the profitability

*THEN*, if you still need it, buy a replacement (and by that time, you can
probably find a bargain on a good used one).
