After yet more computer and Lightroom trouble, I’m back with another small
gallery from Italy, this time from Herculaneum.

Herculaneum lay north of Vesuvius; early in the AD 79 eruption the wind blew
the ash cloud south to bury Pompeii. The eruption caused most of the residents
of Herculaneum to flee. though; which was a good thing because a few days later
the wind shifted, the huge cloud of hot gas and ash over Vesuvius collapsed,
and the city was incinerated with superheated gas before being buried in 20m of
ash.

Only about 1/4 or 1/3 has been excavated; the remainder lies under the modern
towns of Erculano and Portici.
