there were very quick Volksie buses with Corvair flat 6 engines
(Volksvairs) some years ago but nothing like that. However, they did
manage to shoehorn the 6 into the engine compartment so the buses still
looked quite conventional.
These days the common swap seems to be to drop Subaru motors into the
Vanagons (the later style VW bus). A friend has one and says it has
twice the power and gets better gas mileage.

This is the successor to that bus, his father took the original with
him when he moved to Nevada.
