You are probably right. There is the remaining trunk of a dead
Knoppiesdoring (Acacia nigrescens) nearby. We also have some of these:

BTW, we had another big thunderstorm in the early hours - 70mm - giving
a record Nov. figure of 233mm with more rain forecast.
