Yes, 240VAC is often (if not usually or always) available as a separate feed in 
most homes for powering high load devices like air conditioners, clothes 
dryers, etc. The building had the feed from its inception for some of the 
heavier duty machinery (like th air circulation system and pool filtering 
equipment), and a line was extended to our condo unit prior to us buying it to 
power in-unit clothes washer and dryer. It's a larger, three-pronged, earthed 
plug from the standard US two and three prong plug.
