I am not sure if you are asking a philosophical question or a question about
definitions… I’ll go with a definition.
Without going to a dictionary, I would define an alley (or alleyway) as a
narrow connecting passage. Not usually intended for modern vehicles. So, a
passageway between two streets or from a street to a courtyard, often giving
access to residences, to the rear of businesses, etc. In some U.S. cities,
houses front on the streets (usually with some front lawn area), and the back
of the property abuts a shared alleyway which provides access to the parking
area or garages behind the homes.
