Leica AG invented the L-mount. It first debuted on the Leica T (APS-C format) in 2014, and was subsequently used on the Leica SL, SL2, TL, TL2, and CL bodies. Along the way, the L-Mount Consortium comprised of Leica working with Panasonic and Sigma was created and now all three manufacturers are producing bodies and lenses utilizing this lens mount flange and control protocol.
Leica produces lens mount adapters for M-mount, R-mount, and S-mount that allow use of all the major families of Leica lenses on L-mount bodies, and Leica bodies used with the Leica adapters include lens profiles designed to permit very high high quality use of all Leica lenses on Leica bodies. Third party manufacturers like Novoflex, Fotodiox, and Rayqual, amongst others, supply additional mount adapters for many other lens mounts to L-mount bodies. L-mount bodies from Panasonic and Sigma include the Sigma fp and the Panasonic Lumix S1. All of the Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma bodies designed for this lens mount are "mirrorless" designs: It's what the L mount flange and mounting protocol were designed for. It's an excellent lens mount and some exceptional bodies and lenses have been created for it. I've been using Leica L-mount bodies since 2015, starting with the SL body released in November of that year and mounting on them my M-mount and R-mount lenses. When I had the SL body, I also had the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH and Leica APO VARIO-ELMARIT-SL 90–280 f/2.8–4 ASPH lenses (native mount Leica full frame compatible lens). I switched to the Leica CL in 2018, selling the SL body and native lenses in the process. My current Leica CL is just about the best performing APS-C camera I've owned, and the SL was similarly the best performing FF camera I've owned. Both have worked extraordinarily well with all my Leica lenses, and with any other Nikon, Sigma, Pentax, and Voigtländer lenses I fit to them.
