Well now you have it on good authority that sulphur shelf is one that is safe -- but none of them are good RAW... What I was taught in the 80's was that while all of the shelf mushrooms that exist are not by any means edible, none of them would give you more than a belly ache.. However I still would not collect them these days, I confess.

The scariest thing was that even though you might know very well a specific kind , where you find it is important to whether or not it would be safe to consume.. example given was those growing next to a well trafficked automobile road.. the 'shrooms absorb the fumes coming from the vehicles. ugh.

Thanks Ann and bedankt Toine.
Last year I had a brief course in mushrooms. In the field the instructor was chewing on almost every mushroom and then spitting it out. I'm hesitant to do this and I've only learned that determination is very difficult.

That is such a lovely photo.. I've eaten them and they are delicious - one of the few I felt confident enough to gather.   I bet it was not long before those were cut down... commonly called sulphur shelf here.

Autumn is still very sunny here in western Europe so mushrooms are only slowly popping up.
Here a more resilient type, sulphur polypore on a dead tree.
You can eat these but I rather stick to carrots.
