Went for a walk up to Cissbury Ring today, out through a rather beautiful and empty valley, up to the hill fort and back by an unusual straight track which leads from the hill fort to the sea and was probably a drove way at some point in the pre-Roman times. The track is apparently the baseline of the local Roman centuriation, which was their grid system for marking field boundaries. This is all still reflected in the town’s road layout.
