They could have done a better job blending the new with the old.

I wonder if they could have made the new more earthquake resistant? I'm pretty sure architects & engineers knew the principles back in the 80s.

There's quite a bit of that going on here after the earthquakes.

Prior to that the Clarendon Hotel was demolished and a tower block was built
behind the old facade.  It looked absolutely terrible.  It was all damaged
beyond repair by the quakes and is currently an empty site being used as a
car park.
