Just a point of information - original 16mm film had an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 
(or 4:3) which was close to the standard 35mm 'academy' frame of 1.37:1. 
However, there was a variant of 16mm called 'Super 16' which basically widened 
the frame to incude some area to the right, in between the sprocket holes and 
this was closer to 'widescreen' 35mm film. That said, 16mm was mostly used for 
television filmmaking in the UK (whereas 35mm was predominantly used in US tv)  
and 'Super 16' was quite rare. Some history:
