Actually, it is more like Danish, mixed with a bit of Norman French. Arguably, the first great masterpiece of English literature is Beowulf, which takes place in Denmark with places and persons familiar to most English of the time. Again, arguably, the greatest work in the English Language is Hamlet, once again taking place entirely in Denmark, with Danish places and persons familiar to contemporaneous English residents.
