Bob, I am almost certain it is original being situated right outside a large building, formerly a general store, which would have included a P.O. - now a Mining History Museum. Wood & Iron buildings in other areas were scavenged to repair many dilapidated buildings in Pilgrim's Rest itself. Curio sellers use to set up shop (inconveniently) on the roadside but they have now been provided with lock-up stalls built in much the same style - looks so much better but not much business at the moment. The town is a popular turning point for Bikers from the Rand - they lunch at a Bar/Diner called The Vine.

That’s a very interesting place with a good story. Nice to see it when there
are few tourists around.

The Edwardian postbox is particularly interesting. Was it there during the
Edwardian period or has it been added later, for the sake of local colour?

We are enjoying ouselves at Crystal Spring's Mountain Resort about 200Km S of Phalaborwa. Quite a drop
in temperature at 2000m. Yesterday was my wife's (Rev. Ann's) birthday & our Wedding Anniversary so
we went to the nearby Historic Museum Town, Pilgrim's Rest, for Lunch. The Town has its origins in a gold
rush in 1878 & was soon inhabited by hordes of Delvers. All the buildings were of wood &
corrugated iron constuction. The town gets its name from a Delver known as The Pilgrim who found a huge
nugget & declared that "The Pilgrim can now rest". The town is now preserved as a
Historical Monument. If you would like to read the history of Pilgrim's Rest, go here:

The 12 images in this album give some idea of the ambience of the place. The
descriptions are on the images. Normally there is a continual stream of tour buses
bringing in masses of tourists every day but they have dried up because of Covid
& the Tourist Traps are struggling to stay afloat.
