True, however I use PayPal sometimes for payments to e.g. US suppliers
of software having no European affiliates, so I don't need to provide my
credit card data each time over the internet.

There’s no need for things like PayPal accounts in Europe for person to person
payments; we can pay directly and instantly into other people’s accounts with
our online banking apps. For commercial transactions the payment providers
accept bank cards, and credit cards provide very high levels of protection and
chargeback in case of dispute.

Bob's issue may be a UK only issue - like Paul I've used PayPal for many years
and never had a problem.

I’ve been using it several times a week for over 10 years. No problems. In
fact, they helped me retrieve funds from a dishonest merchant.

PayPal is free and safe. What’s the problem here?
Paul
I had an account with them a few years ago and paid for a few things with my
credit card through the account, re-entering my credit card details each time.
After a while I had a message from them saying I could no longer do it that way
but would have to link to a bank account.
I have heard a number of horror stories over the years from trustworthy people,
including a member of my family, who linked bank accounts and ended up in some
sort of dispute which ended with PP taking money from their accounts which, in
my informants’ opinions, they weren’t entitled to do.
So basically Paypal can fuck off.
