John, as Bob said, Askari is a Swahili word for a soldier in a support role like a bodyguard or mercenary. The Italian word "Ascari" is simply a spelling variation. Elephant herds are Matriarchal. Bulls are chased out of the herds when they become sexually mature at about 15 years & live separately in small groups. Older breeding bulls are typically found in groups of 3 with two younger bulls known as Askaris. When the bulls are in Musth, they make forays into the herds for breeding purposes. Fatal battles between breeding males are not uncommon. In the Letaba Camp Elephant Museum there is a skull with a tusk right through it! Anyone's guess what actually happened there.
