Thanks, Paul. Yes, unfortunately, the Redbud lost its main two lower branches in a windstorm. Its wood seems to be even more brittle than dogwood. I planted this particular tree quite some time ago, in a location where another tree had recently died, so I suspect the soil and light conditions are poor, and are factors in the manner in which this tree has developed. (There is a reason they named our street Shale Hill Road. <G>)
