Oftentimes there are easily discernable differences between lens
models that can act as "tip-offs" as to what the exact model of a
lens you are looking at is. You know, just look for the
"frim-fram", and it will be a different color or in a different
location, etc. Or, maybe the lens is longer, or it's wider, or...

Well, er, um, this is not one of these - <g>.

I'm looking at Gerjan's book, pages 114 and 115, at the two
Super-Tak 50/1.4's, and the differences mostly look pretty subtle.
Judging from what I see and read there:

1. The older one supposedly weighs 245 grams (the newer one 230
grams). Possibly not reliable; probably not useful. (The lengths
and diameters are the same.)

2. The older apparently has only an "A/M" lever, while the newer
one could have either an "A/M" lever or an "Auto/Man" lever. (If
your lens has an "Auto/Man" lever, you have the newer model - if it
has an "A/M" lever, then you just don't know.)

3. The older shows "2" at the f/2 position on the aperture lever,
while the newer one shows either "2" or a dot. (If your lens has a
dot for f/2, you have the newer model - if it has a "2", then you
just don't know.)

4. In the three B&W photos in Gerjan's book (one of the older and
two of the newer), the lettering on the older lens is more rounded,
while the lettering on the newer one is more "rectangular".
Possibly not very reliable.

5. Perhaps the only (possibly) definitive and useful difference
that I can spot is where the IR marks are located. On the photo of
the older lens, the IR mark is just to the ~right~ of the left-hand
f/4 mark on the DOF scale, between f/4 and the red diamond. On both
photos of the newer lenses, the IR mark is to the ~left~ of the
left-hand f/4 mark, between f/4 and f/8. (And, intuitively, this
does make some sense, since a different optical formula may indeed
have a different effect on IR light refraction, right?)
