No documents asked to the recipient? Are you sure it's Italy? :-)

At this point, I believe that different customs work different. I bought
about 200 items from outside Europe during the last few years. I usually
received goods either at Milan or Bologna customs, and be sure they work the
way I wrote in my previous email.

Again, it's different over here. Usually, I have to send tax payment in
advance (by money order) to the customs office, before they'll ship the box
to me. From time to time (but that's quite uncommon) I'm asked to pay the
postman.
