I seem to recall that when I first came into contact with photography the great neames
were Leica and Zeiss Contax, Nikon S2 was just being produced, Voiugtlander, Reid,
Kodak and many others were household names. When Pentax became well-known was with
their 35mm SLR models like the S1a, SV and suchlike. Nikon was emerging with the
F-series and from the start was a standard-setter for solid rugged quality equipment
while Pentax led with ideas, concepts and innovations. But Nikon overtook Pentax in
the PRO-ranks with their marketing strategy and their support base. Pentax lost that
round. Then along came Canon and took a lot of Nikon's share by similar strategy and
by then Pentax was tailing.

I think Pentax decided somewhere to specialise in medium format gear. I still
remember when they brought out their first MF SLR in the early 70's although the name
escapes me now. In all fairness, they have never looked back. Others have come and
gone some more than others (like Mamiya, maybe Bronica) but Pentax MF still rules
pretty well supreme. Fine. This is their niche. Why faff around in the murky waters
of 35mm especially now that digital is so popular. Anyhow, look at how many Pentax
point-and-shoots, including digital ones, are for sale. How many people do you all
think will forsake Nikon/Canon and turn to Pentax?
