Rob points out the possible costs involved in digital: >For what a D60 would cost me (say 2000) I could shoot and develop/mount >400 rolls of slides which is comparable to digital images as no printing >is involved. If I shot one roll a week, every week, it would take me 8 >years to spend as much as the D60 would have cost me, and by then the >D60 would either be worthless or worm food. I would expect to replace >it in 2-4 years either because I want and can get much better quality, >or because it broke. > >Now if you look at printing, for 2K, I could buy/dev/print 200 rolls of >film (say 4 years). This would be 7200 prints which from a DSLR would >cost an additional 25p*7200 to print = another 1800!! If you are >printing then YOU WILL NEVER RECOUP THE COST OF THE DSLR BY SAVINGS ON >D&P!!!
Absolutely. But why did I get a mint A*85mm 1.4 ? Why did I get an LX? I could shoot the same scene with a Zenit and 85mm Russian bottle (no disrespect to Russian gear :-) or even a throwaway camera for that matter. I use those things because I want to. Where's the sense in spending too much money on something that could be done at a fraction of the price (assuming I don't need the quality)? Answer: no sense at all. Except that it's a great area of interest; a hobby. As such, there really is no price limit - I will spend what I want/can afford to attain my desires, as I'm sure most of us do. A few years ago when I built and raced an off road machine, there was no sense in that, either! And the amounts consumed put a DSLR in the shadow! My SO breathed a sigh of relief when I retired from that circus! Sure there's no sense in it, but I could list dozens of things there's no sense in also. Big news: I do it for *enjoyment*. Blimey, if I counted the pennies and added it up I'd die of shame. If the bank will let me have it, I'll spend it ;-). Cheers Robbo. Cotty ____________________________________ Cor, swipe me.
