Sorry, but by "new" I meant "newly acquired", not "brand spanking new
just out of the box". Thats why I used quotes :)

Yeah, possibly part of one of the many updates they did. Either that or
my one's just behaving a bit strangely. Its been doing a few strange
things today.

That's probably taking my comments a little too seriously. I was not
dismissing the tecnical side of photography. What I'm doing is
evaluating my own position of exactly how far I'm prepared to go to
maximise the sharpness of my pictures.

I've decided that its silly to lust after ultra-expensive lenses only
for the sake of a slightly sharper image. Unfortunately it won't stop me
from buying those same lenses for an extra stop or two of speed over what
I currently have, or lower distortion, less flare, lighter weight, etc.
I'm starting to find these characteristics a bit more important than raw
resolving power, particularly in the 35mm format. If this wasn't the
case I might as well sell my entire Pentax kit and buy a Contax or
Hasselblad (and even a lens, if I could afford that too!). Would that
make my pictures sharper? Probably. Would it make my pictures better?
No. It makes sense to do the best you can with what you have, but I
don't think there's any need to go on a big spending spree for only a
marginal improvement in your pictures.

I don't think I'll go there but I have some slides which might qualify :)

The last "artistic" shot I attempted was going up to the top of a hill
and shooting car headlight trails handheld at 400mm. 30 second exposure,
and it was cold enough to slightly enhance the camera shake :)
