Why not trigger an external flash(-es) with the built in one (+ an optical slave)?
Of course, it won't do TTL. But with a digital camera it should be a matter of a 1-2 trial shots to get the light exactly righ, most likely, better than what film based cameras can do with all their fancy TTL modes.
