I believe that Pentax could steal a couple marches on Canon, Nikon et al by
coming out with an entirely new system for the digital slr. Tying new
technology to old 35mm technology doesn't make sense. The 35mm size lenses
and bodies were built to allow the lenses to focus on a 35mm frame. A new
digital system doesn't have to to focus on a sensor that size. With computer
technology advances, it won't be too long before they'll get a 15meg image
from a sensor the size of a postage stamp.

A new much smaller footprint digital slr makes all the sense in the world.
The body could be built around the sensor size and the lenses could be
designed to provide full frame pictures for the small sensor. That would
mean much smaller and therefore much cheaper lenses. It also would make
possible lenses that couldn't be made for 35mm format. Imaging a digital
equivalent to a 2000mm f/4 telephoto lens that could sell for $400 or so. It
could be done with a new smaller size system. Lighter weight and smaller
cheaper lenses would kick the snot out of Canon and Nikon.

I have a few thousand dollars tied up in Pentax 35mm equipment but I'd still
like to see Pentax recognize that the format is going to be obsolete and
start a new digital system based on digital sensor sizes.
