Dan, I bought my son a cheap Vivitar P&S with autofocus at about that age (some 18 years ago). With autowinding, it was very easy for him to burn film. I think the digital suggestion makes a lot of sense for that reason, but get one that is indestructable as 5 year olds are hard on cameras. Regards, Bob S.
