I've never felt good panning with either a tri or monopod.  Like you said, just
can't get the right arc.

I have an archaic rifle-stock sort of thing.  Looks terrible, but actually, it's
really good for panning with a telephoto.  With it, you have to turn your whole
body with the camera, not just your head and arms.  I think that makes for a much
smoother pan.

I can do cars, too!

This was taken with the "rifle stock", and my original slr, a Praktica with a
Soligor 300mm (all long since stolen).  The shot is about 30 years old, taken at
Mosport, of a Brabham F1 car.

And, it's not cropped (really!)
