Don't worry about it Marnie, it's a good question to ask, and I think most everyone will arrive on the basic answer for beginning photography, one, you'll get a taste of what is 'sharp' with a 50mm Pentax lens, and two, the advice that it forces you to *think* instead of just snapping off a shot, is very sound and I think everyone so far has echoed that. If you get a really nice one, you've have that valuable learning tool, a sharp lens, a lens that may stay attached to your camera more often than not, and have a lens that can work wonders in low light.
